Dancer 2005

For many years now, we have noticed that some of the more moving
videos we have shown, feature dance as their central component.
Film’s like Mike Mills’ Bad Ambassador for The Divine
Comedy or Blue Source’s Days Go By for The Avalanches feature
dance within a narrative. Others, such as the ubiquitous It’s
Oh So Quiet for Björk and Fatboy Slim’s Weapon of Choice,
both by Spike Jonze are like song-and-dance sequences from films
that never were. Of course some artists rely on a halfway decent
choreographer to inject some life into their otherwise colourless
lip-synching – boy bands base their careers on little more.
Dancer has none of these.
From the ordered chaos of Michel Gondry’s Around the World
(Daft Punk) to Dougal Wilson making the scarf-and-sword-play of
the Morris men cool (Four Tet, As Serious As Your Life ), this programme
includes archive classics alongside more recent examples of the
genre.
Mirrorball | Dancer gives MGM’s Freed Unit a run for its money.
