The Alcatraz Backpacker Hostel offers a friendly and comfortable atmosphere for its international guests on a low budget. The hostel was colourfully decorated by local graffiti artists. The Alcatraz Backpacker Hostel is centrally located in the Prenzlauer Berg quarter in the former eastern part of town. The wall that divided East and West used to be quite close to our hostel. A 'wall-park' is all that is left now, reminding us of the time of 'division'. Today life pulsates at 'Prenzlauer Berg', loved by residents and travellers alike for its shopping, leisure activities, clubs, cafes, bars, discos and of course restaurants. The area is 100% safe.

The huge horse's muzzle on the lobby wall tell you there's something special about this hotel. It only gets better - nearly every room in this former palace has been designed by an artist using themes as wildy varied as bananas, dogs and air travel, and resulting in the most fabulous yet subtle rooms you can imagine. Many of the patrons are artists or people in the art world - that's why there are also some cheap but clean rooms (€48-88) with shared facilities on the top floors. The new extension overlooks the S-Bahn and train tracks, but is well insulated, as is the wonderfully modern conference room. The Weinguy restaurant is right next door. Non-residents can get tours of the hotel if they ask nicely or phone ahead.

In terms of transportation options, this might be Berlin's most central hotel and the best choice for the direction-impaired. Germany's third-largest hotel rises 40 stories and sits at the transportation hub of desolate Alexanderplatz. Set your sights further from your room, which is newly renovated and stocked with a coffeemaker and ironing board.
