Usually Kim Longinotto (Sisters in Law)
travels abroad to make her films, in her latest documentary she stays
closer to home. The Mulberry Bush is a boarding school in Oxford for children
who have been excluded from school and suffer from severe emotional trauma.
Spitting, swearing and hitting are daily confrontations that the staff
patiently endure, with a teacher-child ratio of 108-40, it doesn’t
seem enough. Longinotto’s signature fly-on-the-wall camera delivers
a pocket in time of these youngsters’ lives - drawing out fascinating
stories and portraits of the families, pupils and teachers alike. Longinotto,
one of the finest documentary film makers working today has once again
turned her sensitive camera on to people living in extraordinary circumstances.
