Filmed over the course of two years, on a zero budget and in between jobs, first time documentary filmmakers Whitaker and Nolan chart the highs and lows of three young boxers from the same club, St Saviours Olympic Boxing Academy in Dublin. Abdul, from Ghana, is fighting for refugee status as well as his honour in the ring, local boy Dean dreams of stepping out and winning Olympic Gold for his mum, and Darren, half Caribbean, struggles with balancing the sport with his education. One of the coaches vividly sums up the mental and physical determination that the boys must show in order to succeed in a fiercely competitive sport as “the smell of the gym”. A riveting, often funny, observational film that shows us a small pocket of inner-city Dublin and its fighters.
