Dublin 1979 and bra size is on the agenda.
Puberty visits four best friends who attend the local catholic school
– it’s about boys, boobs and bell bottoms. When 13 year old Maeve (McCarthy)
manages to catch the eye of local heartthrob Brian (McDaid), she quickly
forgets her friends, school and responsibilities at home. Kissing, smoking
and bunking off feel like much more fun. However, when Brian dumps her
in the local nightclub for a bustier girl, she soon discovers growing
up is hard to do. Ostracised by her gang, and forbidden from leaving home
by Dad (Aidan Quinn), she has to face some real life facts. Marian Quinn’s
(sister of Aidan) debut feature is a charming bittersweet coming-of-age
tale that delivers a script full of energy and innocence. Shot on a shoe-string
budget, Quinn eloquently manages to evoke that period in every girl’s
life with freshness and humour. A huge hit at this year’s Berlinale Generation
