| Set during an unspecified
time in the mid-20th century among the reindeer herders of the Arctic
tundra, matriarchal Saiva (Yeoh) explains how a Shaman said she was cursed
at birth and would bring harm to anyone she loved. The film’s narrative
is relayed in flashbacks as we find Saiva and her young ward Anja (Krusiec)
struggling to survive on the frozen wastelands. One day they find a collapsed
man on the ice and take him in. Loki (Sean Bean) quickly upsets the women’s
harmony as tensions and jealousies soon arise ... Asif Kapadia’s films
have been rarely screened in Germany and never before at Britspotting;
his debut feature The Warrior (2001) heralded him as a stunning new British
auteur. This, his third feature, delivers his signature of a brutal landscape
weaved into the core of the narrative. We are delighted to be screening
his work for the first time.
