A universal story of disenfranchisement and the search for identity. In the mid 1970s, a group of six young men left their homes in the West of Ireland, took the boat out of Dublin Bay and sailed to England in the hope of making their fortunes and returning home. Thirty years later only one, Jackie Flavin (Tarpaigh), makes it home - but does so in a coffin. Jackie’s five friends reunite at his wake, where they are forced to face up to the reality of their alienation as long-term immigrants who no longer have any real place to call home. Adapted from Jimmy Murphy’s play “The Kings of Kilburn High Road”, Collins’ long awaited film is full of pathos and heartache. Selected as the Irish entry for the Foreign Language Oscar, with an ensemble cast that rivals any Roddy Doyle film, this is a poignant study of masculinity and alienation economically told with outstanding performances all round.

Eine Gruppe junger Iren versucht in den 70er Jahren ihr Glück in England, doch wie so viele scheitern auch sie. In nächtelangen Trinkgelagen betäuben sie ihr Heimweh und ihre Enttäuschungen. Einst schworen sie sich, nur als reiche Männer nach Irland zurückzukehren. Nach 25 Jahren tritt nun Jackie die Heimreise an, er wurde von einem Zug erfasst und getötet, seine Leiche wird in die Heimat überführt. Doch auch er hatte seine Träume nicht verwirklicht. Zweifel am Unfalltod Jackies kommen auf. Ein Selbstmord wird immer wahrscheinlicher, die bittere Realität lässt sich nicht länger leugnen, Selbsthass und Enttäuschung belastet die Freundschaft der Männer.
