Women are certainly twinkling in this delightful romantic comedy set in contemporary London. Stockard Channing belts it out as Sheila, a ball breaking PR boss who has her eye on innocent Sam, a a new boy-about-town who manages to blag a job in her company whilst making the moves on Kate, who, unbeknownst to Sam, is Sheila's daughter. Meanwhile Sam’s mum Jill (Manville), an aspiring singer, quickly follows her son to the big city. Reclusive Vince (Hoskins) agrees to be her landlord and soon it’s apparent there is romance in the air. The beauties in this film are the characters. Sheila’s bitter self-awareness she’s an über-bitch, Jill’s never-failing enthusiasm to give it all on stage in the pub, and Vince’s portrait of a sweet puppy in love. Both directors come from a gay filmmaking background and Sparkle shows them confidently moving into a more mainstream field. A cheerfully breezy watch.

Sam Sparks (Shaun Evans) aus Liverpool ist jung und ehrgeizig. Als ihm Vince (Bob Hoskins) seine leer stehende Londoner Wohnung überlässt, packt Sam seine Sachen. Er will in London ganz schnell nach oben kommen, nutzt jede Chance, die sich ihm bietet und setzt bedenkenlos mehr als nur seinen Charme ein. Sheila (Stockard Channing), Chefin einer PR-Agentur, weiß Sams Talente privat und beruflich zu schätzen. Er wird ihr Liebhaber, sie gibt ihm einen Job. Auf einer Party bei Sheila kommt Sam aber mit Kate (Amanda Ryan) ins Gespräch. Sam verschweigt seine Affäre mit Sheila, während Kate nicht verrät, dass sie Sheilas Tochter ist. Die beiden kommen sich näher. Sam und Kate sind nicht die einzigen, die Geheimnisse vor einander haben und so verläuft manches anders als geplant.
